Breaking the Myths about Rowing:
MYTH: I don’t go to Redwood, I can’t row.
TRUTH: Marin Rowing is not a Redwood-only sport. We recruit from all the high schools in the county.
MYTH: I can’t play another sport for my school.
TRUTH: Student-athletes are encouraged to play a Fall or Winter sport of their choice and come to try-outs immediately following the end of the season. Athletes may not play a spring sport for their school due to weekend competition conflicts. You must attend the first meeting.
MYTH: Practices are held too early in the morning.
TRUTH: Practices are held in the afternoons after school from 4:00-6:30 pm
MYTH: Costs are high.
TRUTH: Costs run similar to those of club soccer and volleyball. Scholarships are available.
MYTH:It's a cult.
TRUTH: Rowing is the ultimate team sport and athletes become close friends and competitors. It is also a sport that unless you try it, you’ll never know the pride that comes with the success of a great race.

The MRA takes students from all of the high schools throughout Marin County and San Francisco. The tradition of the junior program at Redwood, and now Marin, runs strong. Numerous Marin Juniors have raced on Junior National Teams throughout the years, and many have gone onto National and Olympic Teams. The traditions started by Coach Cumming and Jana Barto set the stage for the programs' successes to this day.
Our Competitive Program is a 9-month season Sept-May, but we encourage athletes to play Fall and Winter sports for their individual schools. Athletes who make the team may not play a spring sport for their school due to weekend competition conflicts. The MRA is a highly competitive, pre-elite level rowing program and is considered one of the top in the country. We are looking for highly motivated athletes to join our teams to race at the State, Regional and National level. Try-outs run for two-weeks in September and are open to athletes with or without prior experience. No experience is required to try-out for the team. Juniors who are interested in learning the sport of rowing in a non-competitive environment have several options open to them:
Youth Summer Camps
Junior Booster Club
The parent-run Booster Club is the main support group for the junior athletes and coaches. The committee handles numerous functions such as coordinating transportation to regattas, sponsoring pre-race dinners, fundraising, social functions, uniforms, and publishing a newsletter to keep parents informed.
Ergathon
The biggest fundraising event for the juniors is the Ergathon. An "Erg" (short for Ergometer) is a machine that imitates the rowing motion and is the principal land training device for rowers. The Ergathon is a 24-hour event in which every Junior rower takes a turn rowing on the Erg for a certain portion of the 24 hours. Held every February, the Ergathon is a fun and profitable event. But the success on the Ergathon relies on donations. Junior rowers are asked to raise money from friends and relatives which will be used to purchase new equipment
eScrip
eScrip is a potentially huge fundraiser for the club. Every time you shop and use your registered Safeway Club Card and/or your registered credit or debit card at many local merchants, you earn money for us.
