MRA Juniors: The Champions
Every year, the entire MRA Junior Team -- boys and girls, varsity and novices -- take turns on a new Concept2 rowing machine and pull non-stop for 24 hours at the Bon Air Shooping Center in front of Wipeout Grill! This is the MRA Junior Ergathon. Their ultimate goal is to raise vital funds for the team equipment, but last year’s immediate goal was to break their own previous year’s record of 410,018 meters. Success! The team pulled 418,164 meters and Concept2 Rowing certified this as a WORLD RECORD! The champions are now set to best their own world record. MRA Juniors, A Tradition of Excellence and Accomplishment
But world-record erg scores don’t just happen. This world-class performance comes from a tradition of excellence and achievement. The MRA junior rowing team is recognized as one of the finest in the United States, and its alumni go on to row for the very best colleges in the country. They consistently dominate the Southwest Regional Championships and compete in the National Championships. At the 2007 Southwest regatta, both varsity teams qualified for invitations to the Nationals. The varsity girls returned from the Nationals with a silver medal from a field of 966 rowers and 101 teams. The ergathon is your chance to support this distinguished youth rowing program.
Why Your Support is Critical
The Marin Rowing Association junior rowing program is a “club” team and is not sponsored by a high school. The team relies entirely on members for financial support and the ergathon is the team’s big fundraiser in which proceeds are used to acquire new equipment. A new 8-seat racing shell now costs $31,000, not including oars and other necessary equipment. When you factor in the cost of rowing machines and a nationally recognized coaching staff, the importance of this fundraiser becomes apparent.
Competitive team rowing is a demanding sport, but the rewards -- excellent physical fitness, team effort and character building -- are priceless. In this spirit we ask for your support. Your contributions to the Marin Rowing Association are fully tax deductible.
