Mike Altman (’92) races at Worlds Lwt 1x trials

Mike Altman, after just graduating from UCLA Business School, is competing at the USA Trials in the Men’s Lwt 1x. Mike is a 6 time member of the National team and won the Lwt 1X trial last year, but declined to go to Worlds due to a conflict with school.

Tuesday Night update:
Mike took it easy in the heat and won his rep to move on to the Semi Final tomorrow.

Wednesday Update: Mike finished his run with a 4th place in the semi-final and will work towards making the Olympic team next year.

For a long email from Mike after the race, see below.

From Mike Altman August 2, 2007:

Hey All

First off, this is a blast email. You are on this list either because you asked for updates from me on my training for the Olympic rowing team, or because I added you because I thought you would be interested (if you are in the second group, sorry, you are going to have to put a spam-filter on me – just kidding, just send me an email and I’ll remove you from the list, it won’t hurt my feelings, really).

Here is the short version of the update. If you want more detail you can read below:

I arrived here the in Princeton the day after graduation from UCLA’s MBA program, and jumped right into training w/the national team

After one week of training I had a back spasm and couldn’t walk for about 2 days, which was followed by my first MRI, which showed me that I had 2 bulging discs in my back
The back is totally fine now, I’m heading to physical therapy three days a week to stay on top of it and keep it healthy, and taking anti-inflammatory

I raced this week in the lightweight single at the US National Team trials. Somehow or another, I managed to win this race last year without really training. But this year two years of b-school finally caught up to me and I didn’t have the fitness to pull this one out, so I won’t be heading to the 2007 World Championships.

I disappointed because I hate to lose, but in the long run it’s actually a good thing. I actually think I raced really, really well given my limited training schedule, and I think I was riding on too much confidence after winning the same event last year.

I am really upbeat because I can start to focus on training for next year’s Olympics at a reasonable pace instead of rushing into World Championship competition after being in school until June. My body is not quite ready for that level of intensity in racing, and could use a breather to get myself mentally ready for a hard year of training upcoming.

I’m going to take a few days off, and start building my fitness bike early next week in preparation for Olympic selection next year. The upshot – I’m excited to get going with my training for the next 11 months. Now that I’ve wrapped up my degree I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do fully committed to training again.

Marin Team USA Wins 3 Golds at CanAmMex

The Marin Junior Men’s Development camp has put together a “California All Star” team to represent the USA at the Annual CanAmMex regatta in St. Catharines, Ontario. I will be updating this story as time goes by to tell you how we are doing.

GOLD GOLD GOLD and Men’s Points Champs!

3 events , 3 Victories. Starting with the 2- Chad Bailey (Capital) and Carl Nunziato (MarinaAC) had a good race and came through with a 10 second victory.

4+ Dan Felling (Marin), Matt White (Newport), Kevin Rickon (San Diego), Chris Plumer (Marin) and Matt Southern (Los Gatos)Cox
Moved out steadily and won without a sprint.

8+ Dan Felling stroking, Matt at 7, Kevin at 6, Dane Oatman (Newport) 5, Carl 4, Chris 3, Alec Macrae (Los Gatos) 2, and Chad in Bow.
Behind at the start but started moving during the settle and never looked back. Had the fastest time of the day (5:52) over even the U23 8+ crews.

With our scullers winning 2 of 3, we took the Men’s Points as well. The women won only the 2- and so we lost the Overall Points by 1 point (30 to 29). A great regatta and lots of fun for the boys.

All made it home safely. Thanks to all the Parents for their support.
