A coxed four rowing as Marin Rowing Association, USA, raced on Sunday November 2 in the Masters (”Veterans”) Head of the River for Fours in London on the Thames. The course is the Oxford and Cambridge boat race course in reverse, from Chiswick Bridge (Mortlake) to Putney. The race is 4-1/4 miles long (6,840 meters) and is rowed with the fast moving flood tide.
The crew was:
Cox: Adrian Ellison *
Stroke: Michael Breard (60)
3: Marc Batchelder (47)
2: Chris Ellis (60)
Bow: Alan Collenette (60)
* Olympic Gold medal cox for Sir Steve Redgrave’s first Olympic title in Los Angeles.
As a warm up the crew raced at moderate pressure in the Fours Head of the River (open to all) on the Saturday, under sunny skies and warm weather. The main head is open to 550 current international and national team crews, Elite rowers, as well as colleges and high schools. Oxford and Cambridge University squads were both racing. Marin was probably the only Masters crew in the event.
St. Paul’s School is half way down the course and they generously hosted Marin and lent us a boat and blades. St. Paul’s School, where Alan learned to row, was third, at this year’s Head of the Charles, one second behind the Marin Varsity.
The main race (The Masters or “Veterans” Head of the River) on the Sunday featured 221 fours and quads. Entries included 52 total Mens’ coxed fours, including 12 “E” Mens’ coxed fours. It took place on a shortened course due to wind warnings, and was accompanied by torrential rain. The shortened course was 4,050 meters, from just below Chiswick Bridge to 50 meters above Hammersmith Bridge. Marin won their category (E coxed fours) beating Star Club and Tideway Scullers by 12 and 16 seconds respectively. In addition to winning the E category, Marin was the fastest of all the 52 coxed fours that entered (7 withdrew so 45 raced), based on master’s handicap adjusted scores:
1. Marin Rowing (E): 11:25.3
2. Upper Thames Rowing Club (D): 11:27.0
3. Star Club (E): 11:37.2
4. London Rowing Club (C): 11:40.8
5. City of Bristol (A): 12:06.8
