Success at the Lagoon

On Sunday, November 13th, The Marin Rowing Association Masters and Junior Novice rowers raced at the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City, CA. Marin had a great showing, with results and boatings listed below.

Juniors Golden at Newport Autumn Rowing Festival

On Sunday, November 6^th, the MRA Varsity Men, Novice Boys, and  Novice Girls took to the water at the Newport Autumn Rowing  Festival, successfully winning each event they entered. The day started  sunny but degraded into an all out downpour by 9:00 am, just in time  for the novice races.

The Varsity Men brought four 8+’s, all entered in Men’s Junior 8+  event. They came in 1^st, 2^nd, 9^th, and 17^th out of 30 entries.  Coach  Willoughby was pleased with the results, stating, “The team as a  whole did their jobs, performed well and had a great outcome.” He  continued, “We split the top two boats up so that we could train and  race in mixed eights. The guys built speed off of each other and I think the internal competition was good for them. Their result, coupled with strong performances by the 3V and 4V made this an outstanding showing for the entire team.”

The Novice Men won their event followed by two strong Newport Aquatic Center 8+’s. Novice Men’s Coach, Dustin Kraus commented: “The guys did a good job in difficult conditions. This is a strong group and I look forward to getting faster.”

The Novice Women made their inaugural debut at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival a good one with a gold place finish. Novice Women’s Coach, Melissa Fenner recounted the weekend: “This group had a lot of motivation after a second place finish at the Head of the American. We refocused and trained hard last week so that we could come to Newport with a purpose. I was happy to see them race aggressively.”

Over all, Marin won every race they entered at the regatta.

The Junior Rowers will race next at the Head of the Lagoon in San Mateo on November 13^th.

Marin Jr.’s Travel to NARF to Defend Titles, Masters to BIAC

On Sunday, November 6th a large contingent of MRA junior rowers will race at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport, California. The Men look to defend their 2010 titles in the Men’s Jr 8+ and the Men’s Novice 8+ categories. And for the first time, the novice women will bring a Novice 8+ to compete at the event.

On the same day, a large group of masters rowers will travel to San Mateo to compete at the BIAC Fall Regatta. MRA has entered four 8+’s, one 4x and a 1x.

Marin Rowers Win at Head of Charles

Marin Rowing’s athletes took top medals at the famed Head of the Charles last weekend in the first major regatta of the season.

The Marin High School Boy’s 8+ from Greenbrae, California won for the second year in a row, tying the record for consecutive victories with Eton, the legendary English prep school.

The Marin High School Girls 8+ took 2nd out of a field of 75 boats, the same impressive result as last year. Though the girls beat the perennial local favorite, Community Rowing Inc, this year’s winner was the Oakland Strokes, Marin’s San Francisco Bay Area nemesis.

The prestigious international event, held on the scenic Charles River in Cambridge, MA., is the world’s largest regatta, with nearly 9,000 competitors from several continents and more than a quarter million spectators.

The time for the Marin boys was excellent — 15:06.98 for the 3.2 mile course, sixteen seconds in front of Eton.

Five Marin boys returned this year to win their second gold medals – Scott Kennedy, Patrick Konttinen, Sam Seder, Greig Stein and Peter Woolley. They were joined by newcomers David Slater, Julian Goldman, Elliott Gutekunst and coxswain Kenny Thompson.

“I love going to the East Coast and showing West Coast speed,” Boys’ Coach Graham Willoughby said. “West Coast rowing is sometimes not viewed very highly from the East Coast institutions, at the high school level, so it’s really nice to go out there and show them what we’ve been up to.”

The six Marin girls who took second last year — Sophie Rosenoer, Elizabeth Littman, Logan Harris, Charlotte Passot, Camille Kisseberth and Marlena Morshead, were joined by Megan Oeschel Bridget Konttinen and coxswain Jill Berling.

It was a strong start for Marin’s season. Last year, both the Marin girls and boys 8+ boats went on to win the National Championships.

“Quite simply, the girls and I went to this race to win. While we are disappointed to take second, we are proud to do that to one of the best programs in the country and to take second over the other 72”, Executive Director and Girls’ Coach Sandy Armstrong said, “Overall, I could not be more proud of the performance of all the crews representing Marin Rowing this weekend.”

On a cloudy weekend where rain threatened but temperatures were mild and winds calm, the entire Marin Rowing club proved it has one of the top rowing programs in the Nation. The age 50+ Master Women’s 8+ took gold as did the age 70+ Master Men’s 4+, the age 40+ Master Men’s 8+ and the club’s age 40+ Women’s 4+ each won bronze with the Master Women’s 40+ 8+ narrowly missing a medal with 4th place. “ We have been focused on training for, and winning, this race for 3 years now”, said Master Women’s Coach Deirdre McLoughlin, “it is an incredible achievement and I am proud of my athletes”.

Club member Dan Felling took 13th in the internationally studded Championship Singles field, while the 68-year-old Landon Carter took silver in the veteran singles and 75-year-old Penelope Starr took 7th, moving up 2 places from her 9th place start position.

Marin Rowing entered 15 events and qualified 14 crews for automatic entry into the 2012 Head of the Charles event. For more information about the regatta, go to www.hocr.org.

Annual Election of Directors, 2011

Marin Rowing Association

Fellow Members,

The Annual Meeting and election of three of the Club’s nine Directors is coming up on October
17th.

The three-year terms of Directors Geoff Motlow, Steve Johnson and John McCrea are up
for election. At present, Geoff and Steve have informed me that they intend to stand for re-
election but John has as yet not decided whether he will run again.

Anybody can submit their name for election to the Board and the Board and the Club welcomes
the energy and involvement of new Directors in discharging its duties of oversight of Club
operations and Club employees as managed by the Executive Director and stewardship of the
Club’s financial and physical assets.

The duties of a Director consist of attending a half day Retreat in January, attending about
seven or eight monthly two hour Board meetings, typically on the third Monday of the month,
in the evening at the Boathouse, closing the Boathouse on a Saturday and Sunday evening
about five times a year, taking responsibility for certain aspects of Club governance and
oversight as agreed at the January Retreat and otherwise assisting in certain Director-supported
events during the year. Also, Directors are strongly encouraged to make an annual financial
contribution to the Club in an amount which they can reasonably afford and to otherwise
support annual fundraising activities of the Club.

If you are interested in placing your name in the running for a Director vacancy or have any
questions about the election or service aspects of potential Directorship, please let me know no
later than Friday, August 26th, by email (whud52@yahoo.com) or phone (415-694-1271).

Ballots, with a short statement of candidacy, will be sent out to the members in early
September.

JD Carbone rides across the USA for a great cause, www.ridefordan.com

It is one of our practices here at MRA to support our alumni in their endeavors when possible, and this particular situation is too noble and selfless to ignore.

One of our recent alumni, MRA Grad and current Cornell oarsman JD Carbone, whom you probably know directly or indirectly through his family of rowers, is riding across the country this summer on his bike to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Research.  One of his friends in school has recently developed Lymphoma, and in true JD fashion, he has decided to do something about it.

San Diego Crew Classic

Marin had an outstanding showing at the SDCC this weekend, taking home wins in the Junior Men’s 8+ (out of 17), Junior Men’s Lightweight 8+ (out of 7), Adult Women’s Club 8+(out of 12) and the Adult Men’s A category 8+ (out of 5). Second place was earned in the Junior Women’s 8+ (out of 21) , Junior Men’s JV8+ (out of 12), Adult Women’s F (out of 5) and Adult Men’s B (out of 4). Third place was earned in the Junior Women’s JV (out of 14), Adult Women’s B (out of 7) and Adult Men’s C (out of 4). Fourth place earned in the Adults Women’s D (out of 10).
