The Marin Varsity Boys and 9 Novice Boys traveled to Newport Beach this weekend and raced at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, with strong showings from both. In the Junior Men's category, the Men's Varsity Eight rebounded well from an 8th place finish the week before at Head of the American by placing 3rd, behind only Capital and Newport, in a time of 14:53.
In a tremendous showing of determination and skill, the Men's Lightweight 8 decided to race in the same event as the heavies after no one entered the lightweight eight. They started in the very last slot and passed 4 boats, finishing 9th out of 25, with the JV finishing 10th, 1 second behind the Lights. The Varsity Boy's also raced two 4's, finishing 4th and 9th out of 14 boats. And the victors of the day were the Novice Boys, who raced in a field of 12 boats and owned the competition, winning by a margin of 1:09 seconds. Nice Job Everyone!!!
Once again, the singles ladder was a great success and everyone had a great time! Some new records were reached and everyone rowed hard and had fun. Thanks to everyone who came down, it was a small group, but the ladder will need time to gain momentum again. Special thanks to Amanda for taking on launch duty this time. She was able to witness the good, the bad, and the ugly turns at the top of the course.
We will be running the ladder once/month during the off season, so come down and join in the fun!

New Referee Clinic at Marin Rowing
Date: November 1, 2008 12-4pm
To All S/W Region Referee Candidates and Interested Parties,
There will be a basic clinic held at the Marin Rowing Association boathouse. This clinic will be geared to candidates and newly licensed referees but veterans are always welcome to contribute to the seminar. It will also count toward your yearly clinic requirement. If you know of anyone who may be interested in becoming a referee (I have eighteen identified in the Bay Area) and would like an opportunity to attend, let me know. Those of you affiliated with clubs may want to pass the word to your coxswains. This will be a great opportunity for them to become familiar with the rules of rowing.
Bob Scurria, USRowing Referee
From Aerial Gilbert:
As many of you know my two greatest passions are rowing and Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB). One of my favorite rowing regattas is in Boston, the Head of the Charles Regatta. I have had the privilege to compete at the Head of the Charles for the past five years, and this year I am combining my two passions and dedicating this year’s race to raise funds for Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA ( www.perkins.org). I am competing with the Marin Rowing Association in the Women’s Masters Four.
Have you been participating in the eScrip program to support schools and organizations? It's easy! Now’s the time to create or update your eScrip account. The Marin Rowing Association benefits directly from this effortless way of generating funds from your trips to the grocery stores and other shopping adventures.
With every year the "Learn To Row Regatta" with Special Olympic athletes gets bigger and better! The third annual regatta on August 9 was the highlight of the four session "Learn To Row" program.
The spectacular photos taken by JJ Thorp tell the story much better than any words. Please visit the site to see the determination, intensity and joy the athletes experience.

"Marin Rowing Association Enjoys Unprecedented Success at Nationals"
http://www.row2k.com/news/news.cfm?ID=40468
Congratulations to the Adv. Men and Women Sweep teams and our Scullers for their outstanding success at Masters Nationals. Our rowers brought home a ton of trophies (check out the trophy case!) in addition to the women's overall points trophy AND the CLUB overall points trophy! Well done to all.

On Saturday, September 6th the '08-'09 Junior Season will be upon us and I am proud to introduce to you our new staff members!
Our own Graham Willoughby will be heading up the Varsity Boys. Graham has been our Facility Manager and Novice Boy's Coach for 3 years and this year Graham will continue as Facility Manager and move up to coach the Varsity squad. Sandy Armstrong will continue as Varsity Girl's Coach.
I have added two new staffers to coach the Novice Boys and Girls. Patrick Schulkers will coach the boys. Patrick rowed at Ohio State and has a long coaching history under his belt. He comes to us from Texas and will be needing some help with housing until he gets settled, so if you can help please let me know! Melissa Fenner will coach the girls. Melissa is a Yale grad who rowed at Capitol Crew in Sacramento prior to rowing at Yale. She has been coaching the novice girls at Capitol for the past 3 years.
Both coaches are mid-move to Marin but I will make sure to bring them down on a Saturday morning to meet the family and be welcomed.
