Marin Master Men – San Diego Crew Classic 2009 Marin Rowing Association’s Master Men (age ranges from 27 to 72) competed at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic this past weekend, and maintained its record of winning at least one gold medal at every Crew Classic for the last 4 years. The Masters races over a 2,000 meter, 7 lane course on Mission Bay attract many of the best eight oared crews from all over the US. Boats at this level are studded with ex-Olympians and world class oarsmen. Almost unique in this class of competition, Marin’s boats contain 100% local members of Marin Rowing Association. Marin entered 5 events in total, being “A” (age 27 to 35), “B” (36 to 42) “E” (50 to 54), “F” (Over 60) and “Club” (a handicapped event for all age categories). Marin won Gold in the “F” event by 2 seconds, rowing through the legendary former Olympians from Long Beach Rowing Association in the last 250 meters, and holding off a challenge from the much younger Pocock Rowing Association from Seattle. San Diego Rowing Club, Compote and Rocky Mountain Boat Club were further back in the field. The Gold Medal winning Marin Crew was: Stroke: Sean Killeen, (San Anselmo); 7: Dick Draeger, (Novato); 6: Alan Collenette (San Geronimo); 5: Mike Breard (Corte Madera); 3: Andy Kerr, (San Francisco); 2: Landon Carter (Mill Valley); Bow: Joel Kimmel (Mill Valley) Cox: Jay Rhoades (Larkspur). In the “A” event, Marin’s crew came up against a star studded “who’s who in rowing” composite crew drawn from all over the US, that included the storied Winkelvoss twins from Harvard, members of the US Beijing Olympic team. The Marin boat, all local men, including Gary Champagne, former Marin Junior and World Junior medalist for the US. In a very close race, covering the course a full 22 seconds faster than any other Master’s event, Marin just lost (by 3 seconds) to The “Crimson Bears”, leaving the rest of the highly pedigreed field nine boat lengths (26 seconds) adrift. The B and E events were won by Kent Mitchell Rowing Club, another composite crew of oarsmen with world class pedigrees, with Marin finishing 5th and 3rd respectively. The “Club” event was won by Long Beach, with Cambridge from Boston in second, and Marin in third.
